Hairstyling Training Program and Courses in Sudbury

Certified hairstylists are image experts, trained to provide clients with customized hair solutions that suit a wide range of occasions and personal preferences. Graduates of the Modern College Hairstyling Program in Sudbury are completely prepared to take on this role, with all of the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to build a loyal clientele.

In just under 38 weeks, our comprehensive, hands-on training helps students develop the skills and confidence needed to secure a rewarding position as a hairstyling professional.

Sudbury Campus Hairstyling Program Description

Modern College Hairstyling students follow a 37.5-week training program that includes 1500 hours of theoretical and hands-on learning. With 40 hours of training per week, classes at the Sudbury campus run Monday through Friday on the following schedule:

Sudbury Hairstyling Program Curriculum

The Modern College Hairstyling Program covers all aspects of hair care, style, and professional presentation, including:

  • Shampooing, Scalp Treatment, and Product Knowledge
  • Long Hair: Braiding, Extensions, Avant Guard, and Up-Do’s
  • Hair Shaping: Cutting with Shears, Razors, and Clippers
  • Hair Colouring: Foiling, Lightening and Highlighting
  • Using Permanent Wave solutions and other Hair Texturing tools
  • Wet Styling and Thermal Styling
  • Self-Application of Makeup and the Fundamentals of Professional Image
  • Job Search, Retail Sales, Wigs and Hairpieces

In addition to the private training received at the Modern College Sudbury campus, students are required to complete:

  • a 2000 hour apprenticeship in a local salon
  • the Ontario Certificate of Qualification Examination

Hairstyling Job Description

Certified hairstylists specialize in a broad range of hair-care services and typically cater to both men and women. Graduates of the Modern College Hairstyling Program can find work in day spas, beauty salons, resorts, and on cruise ships – although many professional hairstylists will prefer to work independently and open their own salons.

Hairstyling professionals are patient, creative and detail-oriented. They have exceptional communication skills and work well under pressure. Hairstylists have a vast knowledge of hair-care techniques and products, and are experts at assessing each client’s needs. Modern College students who are registered as hairstyling apprentices or have earned their Ontario Certificate of Qualification are eligible to work as hairstylists in Sudbury. Some of their professional duties include:

  • Shampooing, cutting, colouring and styling hair
  • Providing a range of services including blow-drying, shaping, curling and straightening hair
  • Providing and applying wigs, hair extensions and other hair pieces and accessories
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with clients
  • Providing excellent customer service
  • Analyzing the unique facial features of clients to recommend appropriate hairstyles
  • Consulting with clients to determine their needs and preferences
  • Monitoring inventory levels to ensure that products and supplies are replenished when necessary
  • Following safety, sanitation and health standards
