When it comes to skincare, most people have good intentions but even the most well-meaning routines can go wrong. From over-cleansing to skipping sunscreen, common habits might actually be doing more harm than good.

Whether you’re just starting your skincare journey or want to improve your routine, avoiding these everyday mistakes can make a big difference. Here are five of the most common skincare slip-ups we commonly see in our esthetician program and how to fix them.

1. Skipping Sunscreen, even on Cloudy Days

If there’s one skincare rule to live by, it’s this: Always wear SPF. Even when it’s cloudy or you’re indoors near windows, UV rays can still damage your skin.

Why it’s a problem: Sun exposure is the leading cause of premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and increased risk of skin cancer.

How to fix it: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every morning—yes, even in winter. Choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula for daily use and make it the final step in your morning skincare routine.

2. Over-Exfoliating Your Skin

Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and keep your complexion smooth—but too much of a good thing can backfire.

Why it’s a problem: Over-exfoliating can damage your skin’s barrier, leading to dryness, redness, sensitivity, or breakouts.

How to fix it: Exfoliate 1–3 times per week, depending on your skin type. Use gentle scrubs or chemical exfoliants (like AHAs or BHAs) instead of harsh scrubbing. And always follow up with moisturizer to rehydrate your skin.

3. Not Removing Makeup Properly

Falling asleep with makeup on, or not cleansing thoroughly, can clog pores, cause breakouts, and prevent your skin from healing overnight.

Why it’s a problem: Makeup residue can trap dirt and oil, leading to dull skin and irritation.

How to fix it: Adopt a double-cleansing routine: use a gentle makeup remover or cleansing oil first, then follow with a water-based cleanser suited to your skin type. This ensures your skin is clean, clear, and ready for nighttime skincare.

4. Using the Wrong Products for Your Skin Type

Not all skincare is one-size-fits-all. Using products that aren’t made for your skin type can throw your skin out of balance.

Why it’s a problem: Heavy creams on oily skin can lead to clogged pores, while harsh cleansers on dry skin can cause flaking and discomfort.

How to fix it: Take time to identify your skin type, whether its dry, oily, combination, sensitive, or normal. Then, choose products designed to support your skin’s specific needs. When in doubt, start with gentle, fragrance-free options.

5. Inconsistent Skincare Routine

Trying a new product every week or skipping steps too often can keep you from seeing real results.

Why it’s a problem: Skincare takes time. Constantly switching products or skipping your routine confuses your skin and prevents progress.

How to fix it: Keep things simple and stick to a routine. Cleanse, moisturize, and apply sunscreen daily. Add serums or treatments gradually, and give each product at least a few weeks to work before switching things up.

Better Habits, Better Skin

The key to great skin isn’t perfection, it’s about consistency, education, and the right products for you. By avoiding these common mistakes and building a smart, sustainable routine, you’ll set yourself up for long-term results.
