Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kinds of programs are offered?
A: Private Career Colleges offer accelerated, practical programs leading to specific careers in areas such as Health, Business, Technology and Law. Class sizes are generally small. Because programs are accelerated, students complete curriculum studies in a shorter period of time. All programs, tuitions and requirements are approved under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005.

Q: Are there many colleges and where are they?
A: A useful resource for this information is available at www.serviceontario.ca.  Private Career Colleges can also voluntarily register with the Ontario Association of Career Colleges whose website is (www.oacc.on.ca). Note: some private colleges may not be registered with OACC or registered under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005

Q: What’s the length of programs?
A:Programs vary in length but do not exceed one year. These accelerated programs are equivalent to longer programs in the Community College setting.

Q: What’s the approximate cost for a year?
A: Costs vary depending on the length of the program. Generally tuitions run from $5,000 to $15,000.

Q: What are the admission requirements?
A: In most cases either an Ontario Secondary School Diploma is required or a Mature Student Test may be written to gain entrance. Some programs have additional requirements. These will be available from each college.

Q: How does a student apply?
A: Applicants contact the college they wish to attend and schedule an appointment to meet with an admissions counselor.

Q: Are some programs more competitive than others?
A: Private Career Colleges endeavour to offer programs where employment markets are good. Programs in Health, Business, Law and some Technology are currently enjoying the best employment rates.

Q: How are admissions decisions made?
A: Admission is based on meeting the entrance criteria together with special aptitudes and characteristics. Applicants are selected based on their perceived ability to be successful in their field of study. An applicant’s life experience plays an important role in the process.

Q: How can I obtain further information?
A: Contact the admission counselor at the college you wish to attend.
